Job Description:

The Assistant Derrickman supports the Derrickman, Driller, and rig team in maintaining drilling operations. Responsibilities include assisting with mud system management, equipment maintenance, and pipe-handling operations. This is a developmental role leading to becoming a fully qualified Derrickman.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support Drilling Operations

  • Assist with pipe handling on the rig floor and in the derrick.

  • Help with the movement and organization of drill pipes and tools.

  • Support the Derrickman during tripping operations.

  • Help monitor mud levels and assist in mud mixing tasks.

2. Mud System Assistance

  • Mix chemicals under supervision.

  • Assist in operating shale shakers, screens, and centrifuges.

  • Help with routine mud testing (viscosity, weight, pH, fluid loss).

  • Maintain cleanliness of the mud pits, pumps, and mixing areas.

3. Rig Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform general labour tasks: cleaning, greasing, tightening, organizing.

  • Assist in maintaining mud pumps, valves, hoses, and solids control machinery.

  • Report equipment defects to the Derrickman or Driller.

4. Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all rig HSE policies and personal protective equipment requirements.

  • Participate in all safety drills, training, and meetings.

  • Assist in ensuring the derrick and mud areas are hazard-free.

5. Team Collaboration

  • Support Derrickman, Driller, and Floorhands.

  • Communicate effectively with team members regarding hazards or operational issues.

Required Experience

  • 8 years experience in oil and gas operations.

  • Prior experience as a Floorhand, Roustabout, or Roughneck is highly preferred.

  • Experience working with mud systems and rig equipment is an advantage.

Required Education & Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / High School Certificate (minimum).

  • Basic technical or mechanical training (advantageous).

  • OPITO/BOSIET certification for offshore roles.

  • H2S Awareness training.

  • Working at Heights training (preferred).

  • On-the-job rig training certifications as required.
