Floorman/Floorhand (Oil & Gas Sector)
Job Description:
The Floorman (Floorhand) is an essential member of the drilling crew responsible for supporting daily rig operations. The role involves handling drill pipes, maintaining rig equipment, assisting with drilling activities, and ensuring a safe and clean work environment. This position requires physical endurance, mechanical aptitude, and strict safety awareness.
Key Responsibilities
1. Rig Floor Operations

Handle drill pipes, casing, tubulars, and drilling tools during drilling and tripping operations.

Operate tongs, slips, elevators, and other rig floor equipment.

Guide drill pipe connections and disconnections during drilling operations.

Assist in making up and breaking out drill string components.

Clean and prepare the rig floor, ensuring safe and efficient workflows.
2. Equipment Operation & Maintenance

Maintain drilling equipment such as tongs, slips, pipe spinners, and hoisting tools.

Monitor hydraulic systems, air hoists, catwalks, and pipe-handling machinery.

Perform routine checks, lubrication, and minor mechanical maintenance.

Assist Derrickman and Motorman with maintenance of pumps, mud systems, and rig equipment.
3. General Rig Support

Assist in offloading and loading equipment and materials from supply trucks or supply boats.

Organize and transport pipes, casings, mud additives, and equipment around the rig site.

Maintain housekeeping across the rig floor, mud room, deck, and storage areas.
4. Safety & Compliance

Follow all safety procedures and wear the required PPE at all times.

Participate in daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training sessions.

Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or malfunctioning equipment.

Adhere to rig emergency response plans, including fire, evacuation, and rescue drills.
5. Team Collaboration

Work closely with the Driller, Derrickman, Assistant Driller, and other crew members.

Communicate effectively to support safe and coordinated drilling operations.

Assist in training junior crew members when required.
Required Experience
-
10 years experience in oil & gas drilling operations.
-
Previous experience as a Roustabout or general labourer on a rig is highly preferred.

Familiarity with drilling equipment and rig procedures.

Experience working in physically demanding or hazardous environments.
Required Education & Qualifications
-
Grade 12 / High School Certificate (minimum requirement).
-
Technical or vocational training in Mechanical, Welding, Electrical, or Industrial fields (advantageous).

Mandatory certifications (depending on onshore/offshore):

BOSIET / FOET (for offshore rigs)

H2S Awareness & Breathing Apparatus Training

First Aid Level 1

Firefighting / Emergency Response

Valid medical fitness certificate for duty on rigs.
