Overview:
The Crane Operator is responsible for safely operating cranes to lift, move, position, and place materials and equipment as required. This role plays a critical part in supporting offshore, construction, or industrial operations by ensuring all lifting activities are executed in line with operational procedures, equipment limits, and safety standards. Precision, situational awareness, and adherence to safety regulations are essential.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Operate cranes (fixed, mobile, pedestal, or offshore cranes depending on worksite) to carry out lifting operations safely and efficiently.

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-operational checks, daily inspections, and function tests on crane systems, controls, and safety devices.

  • Review lifting plans, load charts, and risk assessments to ensure safe execution of all lifts.

  • Communicate clearly with riggers, banksmen, and deck crew using radio communication and standardized hand signals.

  • Verify that rigging gear, slings, shackles, and lifting accessories are correctly selected and properly attached before lifting.

  • Ensure crane movements are smooth, controlled, and within the equipments operational limits and manufacturer guidelines.

  • Monitor load weight, radius, wind speed, and environmental conditions to maintain safe lifting parameters.

  • Stop lifting operations immediately if unsafe conditions arise and report hazards or equipment malfunctions.

  • Maintain accurate logs of crane operations, inspections, and any abnormal findings.

  • Assist in planning complex or critical lifts with supervisors and lifting personnel.

  • Ensure crane cabin and work area are kept clean and free of hazards.

  • Follow all site-specific safety policies, permit-to-work systems, and emergency procedures.

  • Support training and mentoring of Assistant Crane Operators or Rigging Crew when needed.

Requirements:

Experience:

  • 3-5+ years proven experience operating cranes in offshore, industrial, port, or construction environments.

  • Experience with various crane types (e.g., crawler, mobile, pedestal, offshore knuckle boom) is highly advantageous.

  • Strong background in rigging, lifting operations, and heavy load handling.

Qualifications & Certifications:

  • Valid Crane Operator Certificate (required offshore or national certification depending on region).

  • Rigging and Slinging or Banksman certification (advantageous).

  • Offshore survival, medical, and safety certifications (if applicable to the site).

  • Valid operator competency assessment or OEM training (preferred).

Education:

  • Technical or vocational qualification in lifting operations, mechanical fields, or related discipline (preferred).

  • Additional crane-specific technical courses are an advantage.

Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of crane mechanics, load charts, and lifting regulations.

  • High level of situational awareness and ability to assess risks in real time.

  • Excellent communication skills with full understanding of hand signals and radio protocol.

  • Ability to operate under pressure, especially during heavy or critical lifts.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities, especially when handling unexpected issues or environmental changes.

  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and procedural compliance.

  • Physical fitness appropriate for the demands of lifting operations.
